PRODUCT DESIGN, STRATEGY & MANAGEMENT
Redesigned a popular data management app to improve retention by increasing user understanding of how the app tracks data usage.
OVERVIEW
Product designer and creative director on a 3-week project to redesign Data Boost, an already released data management app. With around 1,000 MAU our engagement was good, but we lost about 90% of users in the first month.
DESIGN OBJECTIVE
BUSINESS GOALS
Increase conversion
There was large user drop-off the first month; about 90% of users. How can we make this better?
Increase engagement
Users that used it during first month tended to stick around. How can we increase daily usage?
APP PROTOTYPE
OLD UI
To get a baseline, we took a look at the analytics: MAUs, DAUs, funnels, drop off point, etc. We also usability tested the old app design with 7 people, to get at the “whys” behind the numbers. From our usability tests we learned that some of the visualizations & copy were unclear, users often didn’t have very much knowledge about their data plans, and that users were excited about the value prop of the Data Boost app.
UPDATED UI
RESULTS
We were only able to release a handful of our planned improvements, but still had some pretty great results!
